Located in southwestern Idaho in Elmore County, on a desert plateau between two great mountain ranges, 2,996 feet above sea level. Mountain Home AFB is located approximately 50 miles southeast of Boise and 95 miles northwest of Twin Falls, Idaho.
There is only one airport 60 miles from the base and that is the Boise airport Take your sponsor to pick you up because there is no means of transportation from the airport to the base which is very expensive except for the service of limited taxi. If you find yourself without transportation, call the command post at 208-828-5800 for assistance.
The closest airport to Mountain Home Air Force Base is Boise International Airport, which is approximately 50 miles from the base. There is limited shuttle service from the airport to MHAFB Contact Mountain Home Shuttle Service at 1 (208) 580-1887 for transportation.
1. From Twin Falls, take exit 95 toward Mountain Home/Fairfield on I-84 West - American Legion. Take a left on Main Street at the American Legion (about 2 miles). Continue on Main Street, which becomes ID-67 for about 10 miles to the gate of MHAFB.

2. From Boise I-84 east - take ID-51 toward Mountain Home/Brunei. Continue on ID-51 for approximately 7 miles through the town of Mountain Home ID-51 will become ID-67; Walk for about 10 kilometers to the gate of MHAFB
If you are traveling with an ID card holder in a separate vehicle, you must have a federally accepted STAR license, insurance and registration and check-in at the Gate Visitor Center on the right side of the gate.
Guards perform 100% ID checks at all gates All visitors must have a valid military ID or go to the Visitor Control Center for a pass
If you are arriving at Mountain Home AFB by commercial means, you must call your sponsor from the Visitor Center on the main page. Your sponsor or unit representative will arrange transportation on base or Base Taxi can be reached at 1 (208) 828-2215. If arriving by taxi, the taxi driver must be sponsored by a member of the military through the Visitor Center from 0730 to 1630 Monday to Friday, excluding holidays and family days. Outside of the hours listed above, visitor passes can be purchased at the front door or call 1 (208) 828-2256 for assistance.

There are several cities near Mountain Air Force Base: Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Kuna, Grand View, Mountain Home and Glens Ferry. Most of these towns are within 40 miles of the base except Mountain Home, which is only 12 miles from the base.
Mountain Home is the largest city in Elmore County, Idaho, with a current population of 11,000 people. The town was originally just a post office stop, but with the addition of the railroad through the area, the town grew more rapidly. Most students attend school in the Mountain Home School District near the base Although all public schools, Mountain Home AFB Elementary School is located on base All other major mountain homes and bases in the Pine, Idaho area; Children who live more than 1.5 kilometers from the school will be provided with bus service

Mountain Home Air Force Base is about 3,000 feet above sea level, and has a hot and humid climate, with summer high temperatures ranging from 85-100 degrees and 45-60 degrees. The average winter high is 45 degrees, the average minimum is 24 degrees. Summers are short, hot, dry and mostly clear and winters are very cold, dry and partly cloudy. Be sure to keep a light jacket in your car for those chilly nights, and invest in a warm winter jacket for those snowy days.
